I am using Geth 1.8.15-stable-89451f7c and starting geth in syncmode "light" starts importing block headers from 0. Is this expected or should it not start from the most recent block?

Following is the command I used to start light client:

geth --syncmode "light" --datadir data --rpc --rpcaddr localhost --rpcapi db,eth,net,web3,txpool --networkid 3711 -unlock 0x88978ac640c6b1e90a1be434af1907c26501543e --password password.txt --nodiscover --verbosity 4

Following are the logs:

  • It is expected.

  • @Briomkez Is this changed recently with latest versions of geth? Could you please confirm? As per this link, it is stated otherwise ethereum.stackexchange.com/questions/17916/…

  • @Briomkez, I could see the light client getting crashed when trying to download the entire headers from beginning. The AWS instance where I am trying to run the light node has got only 512 MB Ram. Does it require more memory? I thought this was enough for a light client.

  • Maybe you're right (it is possible that it does not start from the beginning) . But the protocol requires that the light nodes downloads ALL the block headers (so that it can eventually ask other peers in the network to provide the information with a given hash).
