I'm trying to understand some of the finer points of NFTs. What makes NFTs traceable? Is it the transaction history stored on the ledger? Is there anything else to it?

Key to the NFT's traceability is the _tokenID mapping correct (linked to OwnerOf)? How is the tokenID expressed? (It's an integer, right? Who or what determines what the integer/string is?) If I purchase an NFT, would I be able to look "inside" to see the tokenID, and to look at the metadata on Etherscan, or would I only be able to see the info available to me by linking my Eth wallet to an exchange like Rarible, etc?
