I am looking at this trying to understand exactly what a transaction can be like (from the outside, I don't know much about blockchain). I have also taken a look at these:

Basically I'm wondering how low-level a transaction or message can be. If it's down to the Instruction Set Architecture like an "add" operation in client-side JavaScript, or if it's larger than that, and is instead based on user-defined functions somehow.

For example, if I wanted to sum an array of numbers, perhaps there is a contract (not sure if that is the correct term) or "action" like sum that costs $0.001 gas per 10 items, and an add that costs $0.0001, so you can see how they are derived and related to each other. Wondering if it gets this low-level, or if there is some higher level that exists.
