I'm new in Ethereum environment. I'm trying to create a private blockchain, but I have a problem when I want to start mining.

  • miner.start(1) returns null
  • eth.hashrate returns 0
  • "Generated ethash verifaction cache" doesn't stop

I did the following steps :

On Windows :

Install geth: I executed the following commands on the cmd:

C:\Windows\system32> choco install git
C:\Windows\system32> choco install golang
C:\Windows\system32> choco install mingw

Which exists in the source:

https://github.com/ethereum/go-ethereum/wiki/Installation-instructions-for-Windows

After I created the genesis.json file (genesis block) which contains the following information:

{
    "config": {
        "chainId": 15,
        "homesteadBlock": 0,
        "eip155Block": 0,
        "eip158Block": 0
    }
    "difficulty": "200000000",
    "gasLimit": "2100000",
    "alloc": {}
}

I initialized the blockchain using:

geth --datadir path/to/custom/data/folder init genesis.json

enter image description here

After I turned a console that points to the directory of the blockchain I want to create:

geth --datadir C:\Users\ykahi\ethereum console 2>console.log

to display node information:

admin.nodeInfo

enter image description here

I used :

personal.newAccount()

to create new accounts :

eth.accounts

enter image description here

I created another node by the same method that points to a different directory and that uses the same genesis block. I pointed the console to its directory (the used port is 30304 and for the first node it is 30303) using :

geth --datadir C:\Users\ykahi\ethereum2 --port 30304 --nodiscover --networkid 1234 console 2>console.log

I connected it to the first node:

But when I start mining in both nodes, it does not work:

I tried the same thing on Ubuntu:

I modified the genesis block by giving a sum to an account already created:

{
    "config": {
        "chainId": 15,
        "homesteadBlock": 0
        "eip155Block": 0,
        "eip158Block": 0
    },
    "difficulty": "200000000",
    "gasLimit": "2100000",
    "alloc": {"2337801f02f43f125293b39ca720936d86dd1ec" :
        "balance" : "0x13370000000000000000 "
    }
}

But I had the same problem.

I tried to run the following command to start mining :

Geth –-mine –-rpc –networkid 15 –-datadir /home/blockchaine/.ethereum

That's what it gives me:

"Generated ethash verifaction cache" does not stop.

And when I try to make a transaction it does not work.

  • ETH mining requires DAG generation, and DAG generation is RAM intensive. How much RAM do you have? If you don’t have enough, you wouldn’t be able to start mining, and you would experience a failure to complete DAG generation, which seems to be a part of what you are seeing. – abattia Jun 28 '18 at 12:06
